Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear forum members,

The house construction is progressing, and I now need to start thinking about the terrace.
It will be a corner terrace (south-west facing) of about 90 sqm (970 sq ft).
The house description (scope of work) includes a gravel base with Jura gravel that ends approximately 20 cm (8 inches) below the finished terrace height, providing the option to add crushed stone or similar material.
I would like to install 90 x 90 cm (35 x 35 inches) R11 tiles with a thickness of 2 cm (0.8 inches).
Is it possible to lay them on crushed stone, and do I need so-called spacers or pedestals?
Thank you very much.

Hello everyone,

thank you for the responses.
That’s unfortunate, the supplier I am working with and from whom I source the tiles for the house only offers 1 cm (0.4 inch) thick slabs for outdoor use.

Can pedestals also be placed on gravel?

Hello, can adjustable pedestal supports be placed on crushed stone?
You can do that, but is it really a good idea?

I would also recommend a thickness of 2-3cm (0.8-1.2 inches). They hold up better due to the increased own weight.

Can support pedestals be placed directly on gravel?

Those are probably tiles but not traditional patio slabs.
For a gravel base, you need slabs with substantial size, typically at least 40 x 40 cm (16 x 16 inches), and adequate thickness. Minimum 2 cm (0.8 inches), preferably more than 2 cm.

Using support pedestals on a gravel base logically doesn’t make sense.

We use a bedding layer of crushed stone, which prevents the tiles from sounding hollow like with pedestal supports.

A small tip: keep the bedding layer of crushed stone to a maximum of 3cm (1.2 inches) for increased stability.

Great, excellent answer.
Now I know that I need a small or thin expansion joint and tiles with a thickness greater than 2cm (0.8 inches).

Does anyone know a good supplier or an affordable tile starting at the size of 60 x 60cm (24 x 24 inches), preferably larger?
Thank you very much
