We installed our patio slabs just beneath the aluminum edge. It would have been possible to install a mesh in front to prevent water infiltration. However, my parents didn’t do this either, and there have been no issues in 20 years. Visually, I don’t find these elements very appealing, so we decided to leave them out.
So far, we haven’t had any problems. The roof overhang is about 50cm (20 inches). The slope was between 1.5% and 2%.
In my opinion, insulation is not necessary.
