Hello everyone,

There seems to be a huge variety of software available for generating bills of quantities. Which programs would you recommend for a simple single-family house?

Looking forward to your tips,

Regards, Alex

Regarding point 3: These are business professionals. In the currently excellent economic situation, the best companies simply won’t respond to you at all. They have no interest in such games.

The best companies will even (or especially) in tougher times not respond to inquiries when they are not confident that the requester understands the difference between fair competition and street hustling.

Breaking these rules without being asked is poor etiquette. The temptation is strong, as the potential benefit seems high. The temptation is strong because others do it as well. It still remains poor etiquette.

This is exactly where I see the decline of standards: that potential clients are aware of this poor etiquette, but perceive it as their inherent right “by virtue of their role as consumers.” Because “price-conscious” behavior, aka “not being naive,” is supposedly a societal norm, an instrument in the “class struggle” against providers who are seen as greedy and who, with their profit margins, are believed to be deliberately blocking consumers from obtaining the material prosperity they feel entitled to.

I’m really glad not to live where you do. I contacted 15 trades, about 3 inquiries each, ALL responded, were friendly, willing to negotiate, took time for a personal discussion, and all build cleanly.

Best regards

That means fifteen trades with about two requests each took the trouble without gaining any contract. At least that’s something—unfortunately, it has become more common nowadays to engage around five or more bidders “for free.”
