Hello everyone,

we are currently building a single-family house on a sloped plot.
Due to the slope, the rear side of the basement is exposed, and that is where our garden is located.
At the moment, only the basement has been built, and the construction company has already filled the lower garden area by about 0.5 to 1 meter (1.5 to 3 feet) above the natural ground level to create a flat surface. According to the site development plan, we have to step back to the natural ground level 0.5 meters (1.5 feet) before reaching the neighbor’s property line, which we have done.

The neighbor below us is also in the construction phase but plans to move in by August. He will be digging out his garden a bit.

Now, both he and I are worried that our undeveloped ground could slide down onto his property. He will take care of stabilizing his land, but from the boundary line onward, it is our responsibility. I want to do something proper when landscaping the garden next year, but what can I do until then?

I don’t want to spend a lot of money on retaining walls right now while we are still in the middle of construction. We don’t even know exactly how we want to design the garden yet. How can I secure the area temporarily? Would it be enough to cover it with a geotextile fabric weighted down with stones?

Thanks for your answers!

What you are doing there is a mistake. You should have left the original ground level with you and him and created a small embankment with a moat between you. But now it has turned into a staircase, and only retaining stones remain.

Did they have an official order for that?

Do you have a drawing (cross-section)?

What exactly is that supposed to keep out?

It would be helpful to clarify that first. My initial thought (after agreeing with Karsten that it was a mistake not to coordinate) was to use planting rings or something similar, which could be reused later (possibly in a different location).
