Hello fellow home builders,

We are currently planning the electrical installation for our new build, including LAN and telephone connections. I have already read a lot but haven’t found a satisfactory answer for our exact situation online. Your assessment would be very helpful:

We have a utility room in the basement where, naturally, the phone line from the telecom provider enters. If I understand correctly, a telecom standard telephone outlet (TAE socket) is always installed there? And the line belongs to the telecom provider up to that point?

We want to install the network wiring in the utility room, but the router is planned to be located on the ground floor. We have a spot where we are quite sure there will be Wi-Fi coverage where it’s needed. So we planned to install a power outlet and four LAN ports there. One port would bring the signal from the TAE socket in the basement to the router, and three would go back down to the patch panel/switch. Essentially, I would prefer to run a cable from the telephone outlet to the patch panel and then up to the router.

My main question is: Is this possible? Can a network cable carry the two-wire DSL signal, and if so, which adapters would I need? How should the two wires be connected to the patch panel?

Or is our electrician right in saying that we need an (additional) TAE socket where the router will be? According to him, everything else would be complicated and require a custom cable... We would actually like to avoid having a TAE socket on the ground floor, both for aesthetic reasons and flexibility (maybe the router will be moved at some point).

Thanks for your help and experiences...

Good luck, Björn

Sorry, but I’m a bit confused… where exactly do I plug in the telephone? And the fax? Both require an RJ11 socket. Into the access point? And the fax still needs a power outlet anyway. The cordless handset does too. And the Panasonic desk phone as well. So PoE doesn’t really offer any advantage here.

In addition to Wi-Fi, we would also like to use the DECT function of the Fritzbox. However, we are not willing to purchase an additional access point or a new IP-capable DECT phone...

No drama, ladies:

When using an all-in-one device like a Fritz, the explanations for separate components need to be reconsidered accordingly.

So, with the main distribution point (MDP) and single TAE socket in the basement, but the Fritz acting as router, Wi-Fi access point, and telephone system in the office: from the MDP to the first TAE socket, the connection is installed by the telecom provider as usual. It’s perfectly fine—and even better—to use the supplied connection cable in the TAE socket, because a TAE-to-RJ adapter will not have the Fritz-specific wiring. The Fritz end of this cable can go into the patch panel, from there (wired straight through without any changes to pin assignments) extended via the house wiring to the location of the Fritz. The Fritz then serves as Wi-Fi access point, and you can plug the fax machine into it there as well. Its LAN output is routed back to the patch panel, so from the telecom room, the connection can be distributed to all computers (and/or IP phones) wired to the LAN that are not located in the same room as the Fritz.

A decent access point might cost around 150 euros. The wiring setup you have in mind will cost significantly more. Telephone cables should, of course, be installed starting from the basement. But who still needs fax and landline in 2017?

That does not exclude each other.

That’s a matter of personal preference.

Why? What is the difference between a Gigaset and a mobile phone?
