ᐅ Telekom Hybrid or Vodafone Cable – Advantages and Disadvantages for Internet Access

Although I am building in the capital city (yes, really in Berlin itself), there will be no decent DSL available at my construction site (max. 6 Mbit). So far, I have been considering either Vodafone cable (although I haven’t received an offer yet) or Telekom hybrid.
Until now, I was leaning towards cable. But reports about complete outages in the evening and disadvantages due to shared bandwidth are making me reconsider whether I should go with Telekom after all.
What are the pros and cons of these two technologies?
Side question: Other traditional DSL providers like 1&1 or O2 are offering me higher speeds up to 50 Mbit. Is that even possible if Telekom only promises 6 Mbit? As far as I know, they don’t have their own lines but use Telekom’s infrastructure, right?

Thanks and best regards

With cable connections, a lot depends on the segment you are connected to, such as oversubscription or upstream interference. Often, the best approach is to ask neighbors how it works for them, but this only reflects the current situation. The future could bring either further segment oversubscription or segment upgrades.

For hybrid connections, the placement of the router needs to be considered. Utility rooms are often not ideal locations for mobile reception. This should be taken into account when wiring the house to allow for different placement options.

We previously had a 16 Mbit connection from the telecom provider. It was always reliable, but the bandwidth was simply not enough when five people were online at the same time.
We then switched to Kabel Deutschland/Vodafone with 200 Mbit. The download speed is great.
BUT the upload is really poor… sometimes below 1 Mbit, and the ping isn’t exactly impressive either.
I especially noticed the upload speed when accessing the NAS via Nextcloud.

It also depends on the time of day and how many neighbors have also switched to cable.

With the new build, there will be fiber optic directly into the house. And I can even see the fiber distribution box from the living room 😎

@chr2010 Yes, I’m also in Baden-Württemberg. We have Telekom installed and an additional empty conduit in case fiber optic is available in the future. I know many people who, like us, have no issues with Vodafone.

The quality of cable internet, as others have already mentioned, is a matter of luck. I personally have no problems at all (250 Mbit at Vodafone, with 1 Gbit available). It consistently delivers 100% or even more. Just one residential area away, there are only issues.

Regarding your side question: Take a close look at the O2 website. Somewhere in the fine print, the possible speed at your address is listed. I had the same problem. 50 Mbit available, but just a few steps away it suddenly said, "Only 16 Mbit can be provided at your connection."

Unlike with DSL, the distance to it hardly matters at all. 😉

I wouldn’t say that... if it’s too far away, it might be that your exact house won’t be connected because it’s not worth it :p

My experience: Unitymedia/Vodafone generally have "more" outages and worse service (compared to Telekom, and yes, it can get even worse). We have Unitymedia ourselves in NRW, and my clients who use them (all business connections with 400/500 Mbps down and 20-50 up) have experienced about three major outages over the past few years that lasted from hours to days, while Telekom had only one outage (just under a day).

But if I could get cable, I would never choose hybrid. In my opinion, hybrid is less reliable and more complex/difficult regarding router placement (possibly requiring an external antenna).
