Hello everyone,

My utility room with the heating system, hot water tank, and related equipment is a separate room behind the garage. Therefore, the wall was only constructed by the main contractor as agreed. We already had enough work with filling and painting inside the house, so in the utility room, the untreated gypsum board remained on top of the OSB board. Now that the heating system is installed, it’s difficult for me to fill and paint this area properly.

In terms of size, I want to use the room not only for storage but also for a workbench. I find paint on filled gypsum board quite sensitive even inside the house. What would you advise me now to finish the room? I can fill and paint the ceiling without problems because I can still reach it well, and sensitivity is less of an issue there. But how about the rest?

Best regards,
Robin

Painting should have been done before the installation was put in place. How can you reasonably paint around this mess now? It’s very frustrating and usually results in a patchy finish on the wall.

It’s annoying, but if you can do it, the result looks good afterwards...

You can paint well behind pipes if you wrap them neatly with plastic, such as garbage bags, so that you can easily paint the wall in these areas with a small roller. Once a pipe gets paint on it, it looks shabby.
