Dear Home Building Forum,

We have found our property and will be moving into our new house next year. The purchase was a swap deal, meaning the sellers of the house are the buyers of our current apartment. So far, so good.

Now we are planning and considering the best way to manage the transition, as the new house still requires some renovation work such as sanding the parquet flooring in the living-dining area and installing new floors in the bedrooms (there is currently carpet, and I have a dust allergy) as well as painting.

Do you have any ideas on how to ensure a smooth handover? Does one party necessarily have to move into a temporary rental?

Thank you for your ideas and suggestions.

Since, according to the physics as we understand it, two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time, I see no alternative to a short-term vacation rental / storage unit or similar.

Friends of ours executed this in a very systematic way at the time:

- Emptied the apartment, storing furniture and other items in a storage unit
- Renovated the apartment together (both families)
- Moved into the apartment
- Renovated the house
- Moved into the house

At first, the house was only half-occupied for a while until everything was finished. In the end, the costs for the vacation rental and the storage unit totaled the equivalent of 2 weeks.

Is it mandatory for one party to move into a vacation home?
If the house has two bathrooms, I would consider moving in while the other party is still living there. Maybe you could also add a camper or motorhome. We don’t have enough information about the family structures to say more.
