Hello,

My bathroom is currently being renovated. This morning, I noticed that the company ordered standard gray drywall panels, specifically KNAUF GKB gypsum boards.

The ceiling will be suspended throughout the entire bathroom, including above the shower where there is steam and moisture.

As a layperson, I naturally thought this was incorrect because moisture-resistant "green" boards are supposed to be used in bathrooms. Another contractor who stopped by briefly this morning said the same thing.

On my way to work, I happened to meet a bathroom renovation company at a bakery and asked them briefly as well 🙂 They also said it was nonsense and that green boards are needed.

I explained the situation to my contractor, and he said he always uses these standard panels because the impregnated ones are not necessary. He explained that they will seal everything with PCI Gisogrund.

I then contacted Knauf and PCI for advice. The specialists there confirmed that this approach works but were very focused on standards and regulations.

Should I stop the construction work in the bathroom now?

You are paying for everything. Do you feel comfortable with that?

Clearly, green boards should be installed there.
Gisogrund should also be applied, as usual.

In bathrooms, impregnated (green) boards must be used.
For double-layer drywall installation, only the outer layer should be made of impregnated boards.
Surfaces that will be tiled afterwards must be primed.

…I agree with everyone who says you should go with the green ones; for just a few square meters, they only cost a few euros more. Otherwise, you’ll always be worrying about them…

I’m not a professional, but I’ve heard that green boards are only required to be used in "wet rooms." A private bathroom, however, is not considered a wet room. Maybe it’s worth checking into that.

That said, I always install green boards in the bathroom, guest toilet, and kitchen. It costs a bit more, but I believe I’ve done it the “right” or “better” way :-)
