ᐅ Surprised by the low gas consumption

Just recently, someone asked me about our monolithic construction using only 24 cm (9.5 inches) aerated concrete blocks (without underfloor heating, small solar thermal system, 148 sqm (1594 sq ft)) and how high our heating costs are. I had estimated up to 1600 euros because consumption is supposed to be higher during the first years in a new building.
And just now I saw that we used less than 10,000 kWh last year, which is about 900 euros below my estimate.

We always keep it pretty warm and only installed electric programmable thermostats 4 weeks ago.

What are your energy consumption figures?
I can’t really explain why ours is so low.

Incidentally, we never had any problems with high indoor humidity. It has been normal from the start.

Best regards

Our first billing for 2017/2018 KfW 70, 150 m² (1,615 sq ft), 8,100 kWh gas.
But it didn’t surprise me, I planned for 9,000 kWh. Google also shows similar figures for energy efficiency.

160 sqm, KfW 55, this year we are looking at about €450 for heating costs plus €150 for hot water with the air-to-water heat pump.
I had hoped for a bit less; I think next year the flow temperature will stabilize at a slightly lower level.

May I ask which 24 cm (9.5 inch) aerated concrete blocks you used? It’s surprising that you managed to comply with the energy-saving regulations using those. Were there any other measures?

I can’t tell you... I think it was Ytong? No additional measures. Town & Country standard...

I have read about new buildings consuming 20,000 or even 30,000 kWh in some cases. But those were probably the ones where something went wrong...

Do you remember your calculated energy values from back then?

I don’t think it’s actually that little. We heat 100m2 (1,076 sq ft) plus the laundry room in the basement. Recently, we consumed just under 11,000 kWh. However, our house is an older building from 1921, insulated in 1992, with the basement still currently uninsulated. On the ground floor, there are still three double-glazed windows from 1992 and a rather drafty front door from the same year. The basement door to the laundry room is also old. With a new build featuring better insulation, completely new windows and doors, etc., I would expect the consumption to be significantly lower—unless I’m missing something?
