ᐅ Additional cost for windows beyond the standard building specifications

Good evening,
I could use some help with the topic of windows. Our home builder wants an additional charge of €24,200 for upgrading the windows according to the architectural plan specified in the building contract. This amount seems quite high to me at first glance.
According to our builder, the additional €24,200 is broken down as follows:

  • €5,000 for a 3-meter (10-foot) lift-and-slide door.
  • €2,750 for a triangular window in the attic.
  • €2,750 for a corner window in the kitchen.
  • 2 x €1,750 for full-height windows on the upper floor bay.
  • 2 x €1,000 for strip windows.
  • 2 x €1,500 for full-height windows, 50cm (20 inches) wide, in the ground floor bay on the left and right.
  • €1,500 for a full-height window in the utility room.
  • €1,500 for a full-height window in the office.
  • .....

Attached are excerpts from our building specification and our floor plans.

Is there anyone in the forum with experience who can advise whether these prices are reasonable?

Many thanks

I didn’t mean a note of thanks, but rather addressing follow-up questions, speculations, or suggestions.

after all the floor-to-ceiling windows. They take up your usable wall space.
Well, upstairs they certainly have less justification. Downstairs I don’t see a lack of usable wall space, but rather opportunities to go outside.

Floor-to-ceiling window in the office... I would definitely reconsider the window placement.
I would feel the same in the living room: centrally placed windows are often not very appealing. It’s more common to use the golden ratio, or here, to position it about 80cm (31.5 inches) away from the planned TV wall.

The contract doesn’t even include the windows shown in the floor plan, only the calculated minimum required by law.
Unbelievable! That this actually happens.
I really appreciate our general contractor, who didn’t charge extra for windows even though we added quite a few and customized windows.

It was the same for us. There was no price difference between windows and walls.

I honestly don’t know why that was the case: we had an unusual general contractor. They were architects acting as general contractors for production homes. I also have patio doors everywhere. In some places, I wanted a window sill about knee-high in the west, but the seller said I wouldn’t want to give up the option to access the garden on the west side. And he was right. Then there was a band of windows here, two instead of one there, an asymmetrical one at the roof ridge. In total, four exits in the open-plan space, as long as it didn’t affect the structural integrity... only the roof windows were costly.
For a general contractor, this is a good way to maximize profit.
Of course, every window should be well and thoughtfully positioned.
