ᐅ Additional cost for exterior paint when changing from white to color?

Hello,

Yesterday we had the selection appointment for our prefab house and chose a color (it had to be from the Caparol A1 color chart, for some reason). Today we were told the additional cost for this: more than 4,000€.

That really surprised us because we always thought that whether it’s white or color shouldn’t matter much, so where does the extra cost come from? Of course, that’s a bit naive and maybe simplistic, but we really didn’t expect over 4,000€.

Could you share your experiences? I’d be interested to know how much extra color options cost compared to white for you...

Best regards

Sure. The color can be chosen, but it can also be in bright red or yellow. What options are selectable? And otherwise, no choice. But this is just a theoretical discussion. Since you don’t have any problems there, everything is fine.

Funny enough, we didn’t pay a single cent extra for a fairly strong yellow at the discount store Town & Country. It’s a pigmented topcoat from Knauf...

But well, the damage is done. The general contractor wants 4,000, and there’s hardly any room for negotiation. Either you pay the 4,000 bucks or you get it in white and paint it yourself.

With decent paint and your own scaffolding, it won’t cost you much less than 4,000 EUR (around 4,400 USD), plus a lot of work. The contractor collects the scaffolding on the same day the plasterers finish.

By the way, colored material actually costs (significantly) more. Mainly because it’s not produced on the assembly line but mixed to order. Custom is always more expensive than mass-produced.

Affordable construction companies can also be worth their price. This again shows that even lower-cost providers can be reliable if they are the right subcontractor.

This sounds like the general contractor’s corporate design in this case.

I'm almost tempted to push the limits of our "color options" by saying, "We'd like the facade in midnight black." But I can't do that—in the end, he might actually do it, and then I'll be stuck with my mascara house.

Because of yellow? According to the scope of work description, HBW > 20 was included. It might be a mixed calculation since many don’t choose pastel blue, green, or pink, but rather yellow... however, contractually, I should have received any color in this range free of charge.

But I’m also repeatedly surprised at what the discount builder includes, while you end up paying a lot of money for those legendary architect-designed homes...
