Hello everyone,

I have been a silent reader until now and would like to share my experience. We are building with a local general contractor and have included a certain number of power outlets and light points in the package. We spent several hours with the electrician going through the shell construction, and the following offer was created.

I’m sharing this with you as information about current prices (Aachen area). I would also appreciate any feedback if you notice anything. Here is a summary:
- Additional power outlet €55
- Additional light point €50
- Cat 7 wiring in 6 rooms (always double outlets) €1,728
- Satellite system + wiring in 6 rooms €3,150
- LED spot 5W €50
- Stairway orientation light €96

We originally wanted to discuss photovoltaics separately. However, the electrician has already included part of it in the offer.

The spots and orientation lights seem quite expensive to me, especially since the light point is charged separately.

Best regards
Christian

An access point should be installed where the highest speed is needed. On the ground floor, I wouldn’t place it by the stairs but rather in the living area.

Good point. I’ll put one directly in the living room so the terrace is covered as well. Plus, there’s the Fritzbox in the utility room, which covers the hallway and guest bathroom, where speed isn’t that important anyway.
Upstairs, it’s better to install two access points directly.

Personally, I’m a fan of access points with PoE power supply.

I’ll look into that. It definitely looks neater without cables hanging from the ceiling.

Yes, you’re right, apologies.

A “Brennstelle” is a cable pulled from the wall. But that unfortunately doesn’t invalidate my point.
The electrician charges you 50 EUR for the Brennstelle. Usually, he can’t mix the costs here... one Brennstelle, one cable, no matter the length. For the spotlight, he still has to install a box and a lamp. He bundles that to a price of 96 EUR. A steep price, yes.
You should ask what a Brennstelle plus flush-mounted box would cost you...

And I suspect you won’t get that for significantly less than without the lamp (minus the lamp’s price itself)...

In that case, the socket would actually cost you less... but whether the electrician does it that way...
He knows you’re only having the sockets installed to remove them later and install a lamp instead...
I could understand the electrician if he refuses to do that.

Thanks for your honest assessment. But if the electrician doesn’t install my Brennstellen (whether with or without a box) or my sockets where I want them, I’d consider that close to fraud. What I do with them afterwards is my business and none of his concern. I don’t mind his attempt to upsell me on orientation lights. And since I don’t know much about this, it almost works out that way. But if I decline, that should also be fine.

Sorry to hear from anyone who has had experiences like you described; that would really mean the industry is worse than I thought.
I’ll get back to you when there’s news to share 😉

Don’t get your hopes up too high. Patio doors and exterior walls are often the limit for Wi-Fi coverage. If you want to take this seriously, run a cable.

One more addition for your information: The flush-mounted junction box, including wiring without a switch (for recessed lights), was done at the price of an outlet, approximately €50.
