Hello everyone,
we have finally purchased a rural plot in North Rhine-Westphalia. A small river runs behind our property. We would like to discharge the wastewater directly from the house into the river to save on sewage costs. The plot is quite large, about 3,700sqm (40,000 sq ft), so the distance between the house and the river is correspondingly long.
How steep does the slope need to be for the water to flow properly while also carrying enough solid material (e.g., sewage, etc.) along with it?
Best regards

You need a minimum slope of 1cm per 100cm (1%). It is important that you also inform your utility provider about this in writing. Otherwise, they will charge you for wastewater costs, and you would then have to dispute the bill. It is best to include a site plan showing the pipe route and a photo of the point where it discharges into the sewer.

What kind of slope would be necessary to ensure the water flows properly and also carries enough material (e.g., feces, etc.) along with it? I wouldn’t focus too much on the slope. At the same time, connect a pipe from the river with a pump (of course, take the water intake upstream of the wastewater outlet). This way, regardless of the slope, you can flush the pipe directly with river water. LOL
But report back whether you obtain a water permit under §8 of the Water Resources Act (WHG) — you have to apply for this at the regional government authority. Otherwise, under §324 of the Criminal Code, you will be held accountable — and that could either a) be costly or b) land you in jail.

Is NRW a Hindi term for a province on the Ganges? The discharge of wastewater into the Ganges is subject to strict environmental regulations in India, especially under the Environment Protection Act (1986) and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act (1974). The responsible authorities for permits are the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at the national level and the respective State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) at the state level.Required permits:
- Consent to Establish (CTE) – Permission to set up a facility that generates wastewater.
- Consent to Operate (CTO) – Operating permit for discharging wastewater, which must be renewed regularly.
- Environmental Clearance (EC) – Required if larger volumes are to be discharged, especially for industrial plants.
- Approval from the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) – Since the Ganges is under special protection programs, additional authorization may be necessary.

Oberhäslich12 Feb 2025 12:04Discharge of treated wastewater into flowing water bodies is possible (own biological wastewater treatment system) but requires additional approval from the responsible water and soil association. The slope should normally be greater than 1%. Since it is pure "water" without additives (sludge/feces), a significantly steeper slope is likely feasible. The diameter is more important than the slope (>DN110).
