Hello everyone,
we are gradually taking over my parents' house, and after several clearing-out sessions, we’re now ready to start with the first room. My old childhood bedroom will soon become the bedroom for my fiancée and me. On Saturday, we removed some of the ceiling’s polystyrene covering, and now the question is – what should we do with the ceiling? Should we sand, fill, and paint it? Use a 160g painter’s fleece and paint over it? Install drywall panels? If drywall – what should I watch out for regarding the existing ceiling panels? Any practical ideas would be appreciated. I’m grateful for every suggestion.

Ceiling crumbling, plaster falling off; debris on the floor, window with radiator below.

Brown plastered wall with peeling light gray plaster patches and cracks.

Close-up of brown wall/ceiling with chipped paint, gray filler spots, and a white strip.

Best regards,
Marcel

You have already mentioned some options. All of them are possible. What is the purpose of the drywall? It also needs to be filled and sanded.
There are also stretch ceilings.

First, go down to the floor and check whether it is a warm roof or a cold roof. Is the ceiling or the roof insulated? Is there insulation between the rafters or trusses? Are there any membranes or drywall panels installed? The polystyrene was probably applied for insulation, not just decoration.

Possibly, the insulation needs to be installed or replaced. Is the wood in good condition?

The final step is the design of the room ceiling.

Perhaps the room was not warm during winter and was insulated for that reason.

So, observe, think it over, get advice, and then proceed.

The wooden panels are attached at the top to wooden beams, with insulation placed between the top studs. The roof has additional insulation as well.

The room heats up quickly and cools down slowly when the thermostat is set to 0. I have even seen dormer windows from earlier times with no insulation at all. If everything is nice and warm, I would fill and sand the ceiling, apply painter’s fleece wallpaper, paint it, and be proud of myself 🙂
