ᐅ Experiences with Energy Cloud Services versus Feed-in Tariffs?

Hello dear forum members,

Our house construction plans were significantly disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, but you have to accept the trade-offs when pursuing something important. The good thing is we had enough time to calculate all the options and actually decided to give up our original plan of a gas boiler plus solar thermal system, as a heat pump combined with solar panels turns out to be more cost-effective over 20 years.

The current plan is:
Solid construction house, 148m2 (Kalksandstein – a type of calcium silicate brick – up to the roof ridge plus facing brick)
Air-source heat pump (Junkers Compress 7400)
Photovoltaic system plus battery storage (no provider chosen yet)

Our builder recently received an offer from Senec that includes a cloud tariff. It sounds great on paper, but both I and our builder are somewhat skeptical and are currently researching and calculating further. Unfortunately, I’ve also found contradictory information online.

Is the cloud system worthwhile, or is the classic system with feed-in tariff better?
What do you think? What are your experiences with electricity cloud systems?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

The technology is already "mature." But unfortunately, it's too expensive. Spending around 300€ (about 320 USD) on something silly – okay. Spending tens of thousands of euros unnecessarily – never.

How large would the storage be?
Since it was just a preliminary conversation, I don’t know exactly yet, but I think the storage capacity will be between 8-10 kWh.

You can reduce the required photovoltaic storage capacity by smartly using surplus energy—for example, by charging the hot water tank (this way, the heat pump doesn’t need to run at night for water heating during the sunny months) or by powering an electric vehicle. The battery storage only needs to be large enough to cover the base load overnight and to balance power peaks during the day with changing sunlight conditions. If there are no special high-demand appliances in the house, usually 6kWh is sufficient. Pay attention to the charge and discharge power, as systems differ significantly here. From 4kW onwards, you have a fairly responsive system.

How do you plan to fully charge a 10 kWp solar system with a 10 kWh battery, and also run a heat pump at the same time?

In addition, the kWh withdrawn from the battery must be taxed separately as direct consumption.

I have had a photovoltaic system on my roof for one year now, 8.96 kWp.

I receive about 100 euros feed-in remuneration and only have electricity costs of about 30-40 euros.

However, I still have to submit a monthly VAT advance return. You pay VAT on the feed-in remuneration and also an imputed supply tax on the direct consumption.

Then you also have to file an annual VAT return. You have to do a profit and loss statement (P&L) as well. The profit is then included in your personal income tax return as additional income.

Better read up on the whole tax topic first. This is not easy for laypersons.

Here are some data. You will have to get familiar with this as well.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown... phew, taxes... what a nightmare ops: Hopefully, I’ll manage it well with my tax software... The whole topic is more complicated than you might think, but I guess once it’s done, it’s only half as bad.

Actually, a small scratch paper is enough for that.
