Hello,

Over the next two days, our strip foundation including the foundation grounding will be installed. However, I am not entirely sure if everything is being done correctly, and I would like to hear your opinions.

The trenches have been dug. Today, the concrete workers placed a dimpled membrane on the bottom of the trench. I assume this is to act as a blinding layer? Then the reinforcement cages were placed inside. The foundation grounding conductor, made of flat steel, was placed into the reinforcement cages but was not connected to the individual cages. Is the lateral connection—considering there is a dimpled membrane underneath—of the strip foundation, where the grounding conductor is embedded, sufficient to ensure adequate conductive connection to the soil?
Is there any reason to avoid embedding empty conduits for cables within the reinforcement cages in the strip foundations?

Thank you very much for your answers.

I'm not quite following—what kind of lateral connection is there now? Do you perhaps have a white/black tank waterproofing system and therefore a ring ground electrode instead of a foundation grounding electrode? A foundation grounding electrode definitely needs to be securely connected.

Conduits are fine to use, but keep in mind that you need to properly seal the conduits. It's best to have the appropriate wall sleeves cast in at the same time. I would recommend using wall sleeves rather than just a single pipe. Otherwise, you'd have to drill through later, install the wall sleeve, and seal it.

Oh, I see, then it is probably more of a ring earth electrode. It is installed as a ring within the strip foundation, and a 10mm (0.4 inch) V4A round steel conductor is connected to it, which leads to the potential equalization busbar. I do not have a full tanking system. I have a dimpled membrane under the strip foundation and will have perimeter insulation under the base slab. I believe that the only part in contact with the soil is the sides of the strip foundation.

What does your electrician say about the grounding? He needs to sign off on the grounding at the end. Photo documentation is important.

That’s exactly where the problem lies. I am a trained electrician and am handling the electrical work myself. However, when I worked as an electrician years ago, I never paid attention to how the grounding system was installed because our scope always started at the distribution busbar. Twenty years ago, it was up to the concrete contractors to install the grounding system. Documentation with test measurements was also not really common back then. Since I want to document and measure everything properly now, my question is how to correctly install the grounding system.

Who is responsible for registering with the electricity supplier?
