Hello everyone,
we are currently thinking about the most practical room layout on the ground floor.
In the architect’s very first draft, a pantry in the kitchen and an additional storage room on the ground floor were planned. Now we are reconsidering whether we really need them and what we would store there.
For your information – we are planning a large kitchen with plenty of cabinets, including tall upper cabinets. We are also planning a basement, which will provide sufficient storage space.
At the moment, I am thinking of storing the vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, beverage crates, and toilet paper on the ground floor for convenience. Raclette set, fondue pots, large soup pots etc. could also go in the basement.
Currently, I have food supplies stored in a 90cm (35 inch) pull-out drawer in the kitchen, which works well for us (two adults, one toddler, one baby). If I add another drawer like this, it should be enough for the future. I usually shop almost daily and don’t want to keep large stocks of things like pasta (I keep oils and spices in an upper cabinet).
What do you store in a storage room on the ground floor? What else do you keep in a separate pantry?
My idea now is to remove the storage room and instead install a large, ceiling-high cleaning and storage cabinet in the relatively big study room (about 15m2 (160 sq ft), which will not be used for work for many hours daily).
I think this could save me an extra room with a door and possibly additional hallway space.
Looking forward to your experiences, comments, and ideas.

All our supplies are stored in our kitchen (10.5 sqm (113 sq ft) with 7.6 linear meters (25 linear feet) of kitchen cabinets). In the utility room, we barely have anything stored—just the vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, and paper goods.
I like the idea of having a cleaning cupboard in the office!
We used to have a pantry in our old apartment, and I don’t miss it!

We also had a pantry in our old apartment and I don’t miss it! It’s similar for us. In the utility room we also have a drinks rack and a supply of firewood for the fireplace.
Hello, we have a utility room that also houses technical equipment. We have a simple kitchenette with a second refrigerator for extras, some canned goods, preserving jars, and pasta.
Additionally, all the tools, light bulbs, batteries, and related items are stored there, along with two large cabinets for kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, beverages, shoe cleaning materials, empty jars for preserving, and gardening supplies like fertilizer and seeds.
The microwave, handheld vacuum, vacuum cleaner, and now also potatoes are stored there. The kitchen is as warm as other rooms because it is open, so food spoils faster there.
Many things can probably be stored downstairs for you. But I have to admit that I recently bought a light with a motion sensor at a hardware store because I visit the utility room quite often during the day, and turning the light on and off frequently for short periods was getting annoying (broom, vacuum, cleaning supplies, beverages).

Tools etc. -> Basement
Dryer, a washing machine, household chemicals storage, one freezer -> Utility room in the basement
Everything for the garden -> Garage and shed
Firewood -> Shed
Additional kitchen utensils and quickly accessible supplies -> Built-in cupboard in the ground-floor cloakroom
Cleaning supplies etc. -> In a cupboard on every floor
Christmas, Easter, and other seasonal items -> Attic
Preserves -> Basement.
And finally, everything is organized and you find what you need right away.
How it will be at 70, we’ll see.

We have a pantry behind the kitchen and plenty of additional space in the basement for everything that doesn’t fit there. Laundry is done in the utility room, wine is stored in the basement, and everything else (groceries, cleaning supplies, vacuum cleaner, etc.) is kept in the pantry (about 4.5m² (48 sq ft), I believe). That’s more than enough; a second room on the ground floor would be unnecessary for us because of the basement.
