ᐅ Storage cellar despite insulation?

Hello.

We want to have a storage room in the basement for vegetables and other food items.
This room should be cool.
Since we plan to insulate quite well (KfW55), the energy consultant said the basement wouldn’t really get cold. It would probably stay at least 15°C (59°F).

Has anyone ever excluded a room like this from the insulation? What have your experiences been? Is it rather problematic?

In our case, there is also the option to insulate the basemented garage differently from the main house. It wouldn’t be quite as practical as a storage room, since you’d always have to walk through the entire basement.

I’m curious how you have solved this.

In my opinion, traditional storage within the thermal envelope is not feasible. So, you can either exclude the basement from the thermal envelope or build an additional basement (under the garage). The longer route wouldn’t bother me, as it’s not about a few groceries for daily use (most people have refrigerators and kitchen cabinets for that), but about classic storage. Just as others go to the (super)market, you go to your storage basement.

Hello,
I wouldn’t mind the longer walk; it’s not about daily groceries (most people have refrigerators and kitchen cupboards for that), but rather classic long-term storage. Just as others go to the (super)market, you go to your storage cellar.

Without wanting to be a spoilsport:

How much stock do you actually want to store? Canned goods, flour, pasta, rice, and similar items can easily be kept in the utility room or even a warm cellar. That leaves only potatoes, vegetables, and fruit.

For those, 2–3 large refrigerators should be more than enough. You’re looking at an investment of around 1200–1800 € plus about 100–150 € in annual electricity costs. And you’ll never run out of space for drinks again! 😎

An additional cellar under the garage is likely to be a bit more expensive.

Best regards,

Andreas

By the way, the new refrigerators also have modern vegetable compartments 🙂
