Hello,
we would like to renovate the staircase to the house with new slabs.
The landscaper roughly estimated this would cost around 2,500 at the end of last year.
Now the offer has arrived: 5,000 gross!
Allegedly, the material alone would cost 2,000 euros. Is that normal?
I checked the Koll catalog. Here, the step slabs cost 24.70 net for 80x40x3 cm (31.5x15.7x1.2 inches).
And the slabs cost 55.45 each for 80x40 cm (31.5x15.7 inches).
There are 5 steps, each approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet) wide.
So about 9 step slabs are needed = 24.70*9 = 222.3
I estimated about 3 square meters (32 sq ft) of slabs:
3*55.45 = 166.35
Total sum: 222 + 166 = 388 euros net
He said the material alone would supposedly cost 2,000 euros.
Since I calculated 388 net, the difference is 2,000 - 388 = 1,612 euros or about 1,900 gross.
So in my view, the bill is about 1,900 gross too high.
Is the quoted price for this project realistic, or is this an overcharge?
Thanks in advance!

Are there really no slabs with a width of 1.5 m (5 feet)?

For a small staircase installation priced at €5,000, I would definitely ask for a detailed breakdown of what exactly is included. Your calculation method seems reasonable at first, although you can’t simply take everything from the catalog price – additional costs like cutting fees, delivery charges, pallet deposits, etc., often apply. But even accounting for those, the jump from under €500 to €2,000 for material costs is quite significant.
Often with smaller projects, companies don’t actually want to take them on and simply quote a price that only makes sense if the customer agrees right away. So this could be more of a “deterrent offer.”
Ask for a detailed list of the materials included in the quote – maybe some items are included that you might not expect (e.g., mortar, adhesive, drainage mats, baseboards, etc.). Also, don’t hesitate to get a second opinion, especially when there is such a large discrepancy.
