Hello everyone,

We are currently planning the staircase lighting in our new build. The builder has planned a wall-mounted light fixture centered on the staircase. The staircase itself is an open-riser design with white risers.

Personally, we find step lighting much more attractive. Therefore, we have planned 5 spotlights per staircase (1 on the left, 3 along the long side, 1 on the right).
Now we are wondering if this will provide enough brightness. It should replace the main lighting, not just serve as ambient light.
Can anyone give me a recommendation on this?
Thank you all.

Do you want to use motion sensors?

I was planning to install a wall light and connect it to a timer switch. From 8 PM to 11 PM at 80%, then dimmed to 10% from 11 PM to 7 AM. Maybe something like this could be interesting for you as well?

Glare-free stair lighting as the primary light source is a big challenge if the staircase is not open in an otherwise well-lit room. It’s better to do both. There are great pendant lights that really add character to a stairwell.

Do you have a few examples of clever pendant lights for the stairwell, @hampshire?

@annab377 ... maybe you could share the floor plan layout of your staircase? It would also be important to know the width of the walking path, as wall-mounted lights, for example, should not significantly reduce it.
