Hello everyone,

We are currently planning the staircase lighting in our new build. The builder has planned a wall-mounted light fixture centered on the staircase. The staircase itself is an open-riser design with white risers.

Personally, we find step lighting much more attractive. Therefore, we have planned 5 spotlights per staircase (1 on the left, 3 along the long side, 1 on the right).
Now we are wondering if this will provide enough brightness. It should replace the main lighting, not just serve as ambient light.
Can anyone give me a recommendation on this?
Thank you all.

Have you ever considered handrail lighting? I find it very elegant, as long as there is a handrail.

We are having exactly this kind of handrail lighting installed. In the end, it’s even more cost-effective, especially if you want a handrail anyway. The electrician only needs to provide a power outlet, which is significantly cheaper than staircase lighting with spotlights. We are having the handrail custom-made by the carpenter. The lighting (LED strip) will be integrated underneath, hidden from view. It provides a nice light down onto the stairs and doesn’t cause any glare. I think it looks elegant and is a nice alternative to the standard spotlights (which I found quite expensive with the electrical preparation and everything involved).

That is also a very good idea. However, we are getting a stainless steel handrail. I am not sure if and how that can be implemented...

There are complete systems for stainless steel handrails available online. Just try searching for them.

Actually, I would prefer to leave out the wall light, but then wouldn’t the spotlights need to be a bit brighter?
Don’t people usually install both?

I know the stair step lights only as relatively dim lamps, so you can see the steps in the evening and at night without having to turn on the main light. These are typically on continuously, depending on brightness and time of day (typical energy guzzlers that are mainly installed for the stylish look).

If you want a bright room, you’ll need additional ceiling lights or wall lights. But I definitely wouldn’t use just the stair step lights to illuminate the room. They create odd shadows upward when you walk by.

From what I know, stair step lights are usually quite dim, just enough to see the steps in the evening and at night without having to turn on the main lights. That’s exactly my question. We’re actually not very fond of wall lights on the staircase, so we would prefer spotlights. Since you don’t usually spend much time on the stairs, it doesn’t need to be as bright as daylight, but the spotlights should provide enough brightness for comfortable lighting—not just a kind of nightlight.
