Hello everyone,

In a few days, we have the staircase selection appointment. On the stair builder’s website, there are layout proposals for the staircase. We have allocated 3.04 meters by 2.25 meters (10 feet by 7 feet) for the staircase area. You can find the house floor plan here in the forum at the following link.

Floor plan #44

The stair supplier suggests 16 steps for the space online. Here in the forum, 15 steps are mentioned. So I wanted to ask for your opinion again: 15 or 16 steps?

Maybe someone has a similar amount of space for their staircase in their house with either 15 or 16 steps.

Yes, as I said: my report, the stairs with minimum dimensions for a ceiling height of 2.80 m (9 ft 3 in) from Kerstin @kbt09.

Stairs are planned individually. Whether 15 or 16… personally, I would probably go with 16.

When I recalculate the planned staircase, I get 16 steps (0.1825 m (7.2 inches) / 0.255 m (10 inches)).

The tread depth is not exactly generous. Rather too small. You need 3.16 m (10.4 ft) of staircase length. Or you make 15 mm (0.6 inches) overlap per step, which would not be very comfortable to walk down.

How are you recalculating? Using Treppenportal Germany?

In Kerstin's example, you have 3.375m (11 feet 1 inch) for the stair run at the exit. Can you achieve that at the top as well?
The great thing about stairs is that you can easily calculate them afterwards. I always draw a sketch for that—I recommend it.

Unfortunately not. At the top, the bathroom door frame is right next to it. There might be only about 2 to 4cm (1 to 1.5 inches) clearance to the stairwell opening.

What do you think of the following idea?

- 17 steps
- Landing depth slightly smaller at 90cm (35 inches)
- Tread depth 26.75cm (10.5 inches)
- Riser height 17.18cm (6.75 inches)

90 cm (35 inches)? ... Then you also have to add the handrail, so you should check what will actually fit up the stairs.

In my opinion, the landing depth should match the tread width of the staircase.

I estimate your ceiling height is about 298 cm (9 ft 9 in).

Also, it's not steps but risers that are usually specified. So 298 divided by 16 risers gives a riser height of 18.625 cm (7.33 inches). It shouldn't be any higher than that. Your previous example already had 17 risers.

I find a tread depth of 26.75 cm (10.5 inches) to be the minimum comfortable limit.

The best thing is to walk up and down various staircases in different places. For the ones that feel comfortable, just measure the riser height and tread depth. That way you can get a better idea.
