Hello everyone,

I am looking for specific tips and methods to stabilize the wobbly shelves of my IKEA BILLY bookcase. I am interested in a long-lasting solution because although the shelves fit into the designated supports, they shift or wobble noticeably under load, which significantly reduces the overall feeling of stability. I have already tried pushing the metal or plastic shelf pins further in, but that hasn’t been enough for me. Does anyone know practical tricks or modifications to secure the shelves more firmly and reliably without having to disassemble the entire bookcase or buy new shelves? I’m especially interested in suggestions that provide not only a temporary fix but also make the whole unit sturdier, even under heavy loads. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi,

try sticking small felt or rubber pads under the shelves; this helps reduce wobbling. Using silicone adhesive on the brackets can also help secure the pegs more firmly. Good luck!

Hello Lumin57,

I think your question is very well phrased and understandable – the wobbling of BILLY shelves is indeed a common issue. Basically, the shelves rest on support pins that allow only a small margin for a tight fit.

A proven method is to add small additional braces, such as flat wooden strips that can be screwed or glued under the shelf. This significantly improves stability, as the board no longer just rests on the pins but is also supported by the strips.

Alternatively, you can try improving the support pins by applying slightly thicker self-adhesive foam rubber strips at the contact points. This prevents rattling and provides a better fit – of course, you should ensure that the shelf still sits evenly and flat.

I would also recommend, after inserting the shelf, to press it gently with a clamp or a properly cut wedge while the glue or strips cure – this creates a firm and level hold.

With this combination of mechanical reinforcement and slight cushioning, you usually achieve very good stabilization. If you like, I can provide exact measurements for the strips or tips on materials.

Good luck with the upgrade!

This is exactly the right approach from a technical standpoint. The main weak point in BILLY shelves is the shelf supports made of thin metal or plastic, which cannot reliably hold heavy loads over a long period. The shelves tend to wobble because they rest only at single points.

Adding extra reinforcement with wooden slats or aluminum profiles on the underside not only improves stability but also prevents the shelves from warping.

– here I explicitly do not recommend gluing the supports, as that complicates future adjustments or repairs. Screwing or nailing the braces is preferable, as it is reversible and provides permanent strength.

Additionally, fitting and securely screwing in a back panel made of thin plywood can be done. This gives the entire shelf lateral stiffness, reducing wobbling not only of the shelves but of the entire structure.

If anyone is interested, I can gladly provide a detailed materials list and step-by-step instructions.
