Hello everyone,

who already has a drawer for spices in the kitchen and can give me some advice?

The kitchen is basically fully planned. I can decide whether I want a 15 cm (6 inch) or a 30 cm (12 inch) high drawer for spices under the cooktop.
With 15 cm (6 inches), you don’t really have a full 15 cm (6 inches) of usable height inside, more like 12-13 cm (5-5.1 inches).
(Nolte kitchen)
I have a lot of spices that are not part of any system or brand, so they come in very different containers. (I don’t want to lay the spice jars on their sides.)

If I choose the 15 cm (6 inch) drawer, some of the larger spice grinders and big shaker jars for dried herbs would probably need to go in a cabinet next to it.
That would work, but I would really like to open one drawer and immediately see everything I might want to use in an overview.
If the drawer were 30 cm (12 inches) high, there would definitely be space for all sizes, but a lot of the height would be wasted.

Good luck

@ypg Oh, now I understand. I’m just doing the calculations for us... Since we’re small, we only have a 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in) bed, so in the future we’d have about 1.20 m (4 ft) free on each side...

Hello @kbt09. Um, I’m almost hesitant to say it, but we actually have even more drawer width. Plus cabinets in the dining area with pull-outs for the plates. Oops: I only just noticed that now.
So I think, generally speaking, there is really a lot of storage space... The layout just determines how much we have to walk back and forth and how often we need to bend down.

We have been planning for almost forever now (I think nearly 2 years – of course with long breaks, as the house requires effort everywhere), and at some point we had to settle on a rough layout so we could compare quotes on price. Financially, by the end of the construction process, we are pretty much tied up. Now we have finally found someone who seems pretty trustworthy and transparent and has provided a reasonable rough quote. Schüller or Häcker are, in my opinion, also more expensive than Nolte, and we struggled with many arguments and almost marital disputes to move from Nobilia up to Nolte.
Basically, I’m very satisfied with the planning, except that the spice storage is still really important to me.
Anyway, we are already so late with the kitchen order that the kitchen definitely won’t be ready by the time we move in.

I think you’ve included the drawers. Because I also have

5x80 in 28 cm (11 inches) front height
1x80 in 40 cm (16 inches) front height
1x30 in 40 cm (16 inches) front height
4x40 in 28 cm (11 inches) front height

so that’s another 670 cm (264 inches) plus the sink cabinet plus the dishwasher... oh, there’s also a drawer under it.

But of course, I understand wanting to finally finish the planning marathon at some point.

Hello,
under the cooktop we have a 13cm (5 inches) cutlery drawer, then a 26cm (10 inches) pull-out drawer for pans and smaller pots, and at the bottom a 39cm (15 inches) pull-out drawer for pots with an inner drawer for the lids.
To the right and left of this are two 30cm (12 inches) wide cabinets, each with two 39cm (15 inches) pull-out drawers stacked vertically. One of the upper drawers contains an inner drawer for smaller spices, below that are the slightly larger cans, and in the drawer beneath oils and similar items.
The idea came from our kitchen consultant (who is a passionate cook himself) and sounded very practical to us. We will see how it works out in practice.

Hello @Jochen104,

thanks, that’s something new for me. Drawers within drawers... Isn’t it annoying to have to make two movements instead of one when you want to reach something inside the inner drawer? Maybe I’m imagining it wrong. But at least, all spices of all sizes are in one place.

A lid drawer sounds good. Although in practice, I simply can’t tell which lid fits which pot. There should be a requirement that the diameter is marked on every pot and lid.
No idea how others manage it, I always try several until one fits.

Good luck

@kbt09 I don’t understand the difference between a pull-out and a drawer. I have used the terms interchangeably until now.

Drawers are generally quite shallow... for example, at Nolte they are 15 cm (6 inches), while other manufacturers offer 12.5 to 14.4 cm (5 to 5.7 inches). Drawer fronts are usually taller, often several times the height of the drawer itself. This is why drawer heights are often described in terms of a modular unit system.
