Hello everyone,

We are building a house on a slab foundation without a basement. According to the soil report, we need to excavate about 1.50 m (5 feet) of soil because there are depressions at that depth which negatively affect load-bearing capacity. The building footprint is approximately 100 sq m (1,076 sq ft). Can you advise if I can store the resulting excavation of 150 cubic meters (5,296 cubic feet) on my property, or will the pile be too large? The plot size is around 600 sq m (6,458 sq ft). The soil is intended to be used for backfilling and spreading across the property.

Thanks and best regards

Of course, that will fit; 1.50 meters (5 feet) is not much, and your plot of land is quite large.

...that will be too much for spreading.
From my own experience: we paid 1800 € for clearing a driveway of about 120 sqm (1,292 sqft) (without soil analysis and that was almost 4 years ago...)

If you want to raise the plot by an average of 30cm (12 inches) (and can), then maybe. But do you really want the soil to be like that of Upper Bavaria? You won't necessarily find the finest topsoil at 1m (3.3 ft) depth... In that case, it’s better to remove it...

We had the topsoil removed and only kept the better soil. We agreed on this with the excavator beforehand. However, there was still a lot of "debris" left — stones, pottery shards, plastic... In hindsight, I would have preferred to have it removed as well. But since it used to be a field, we thought the soil would be reasonably usable.

Storing the materials alone should not be a problem. Such piles can easily reach 3 meters (10 feet) in height but will also spread out somewhat in width. However, it should not take up more than 150 m² (1,615 sq ft).
