Hello everyone,

I have a quick question about an issue with the flat roof on our dormer.

When it rains, an unpleasant noise occurs—not directly from the rain itself, but only once a certain amount of water has accumulated and starts to drain.

Then there is a loud “gurgling” sound that lasts from a few seconds up to a few minutes. It’s so distinct that inside the room it feels like someone is drinking from an almost empty glass through a straw.

The plumber who installed the gutter and drain is at a loss. According to him, even the manufacturer of the drainage system cannot provide an explanation.

He suggested that maybe, just maybe, replacing the drain with a drain box could help—but this would be at my expense.

Does anyone know this problem?
Is this a common defect in such installation situations?
Could this have been identified beforehand?
And would this possibly be considered a defect in terms of the construction work?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Here is a photo of the installation:

Hello,

The described gurgling often occurs in flat roof dormers when rainwater drains along with air through a drainage outlet that is either improperly sized or poorly ventilated. The cause is usually a lack of pressure equalization: air is drawn in, the water temporarily backs up, and then both escape with an audible sound. This is technically not uncommon, but it is not the norm when the system is professionally designed.

Whether this counts as a defect depends on how much it affects everyday use and what was guaranteed in the construction contract. If the drainage functions properly otherwise, it is often legally challenging to demand corrections—however, an expert assessment can provide clarity. A drainage box can help but is not mandatory as long as the system is sealed and reliable.
