Hi everyone,

If I add a drywall partition later on to reduce noise, is it worth installing a SK3 rated for 42 dB? Or is the improvement compared to a SK2 with 37 dB so minimal that it doesn’t justify the extra cost?

The wall will be double-layered with diamond boards on either 50mm or 100mm studs (total thickness 100mm or 150mm). According to the manufacturer, a 100mm (4-inch) wall thickness achieves 57 dB, and 150mm (6-inch) reaches 61 dB.

Here’s my next question: since the door tends to be the weakest point in a drywall partition, and for cost reasons I plan to install at most an SK3 door, is it even worth building the 150mm (6-inch) wall?
(Plus, there’s also flanking transmission, continuous screed beneath the new wall, etc.)

I’d appreciate if you could share your experiences here!
Thanks and best regards
