Hello,

I would like to reduce the humming noise from our ground source heat pump in the utility room. This humming can be heard outside the utility room.

1) Should I better insulate the heat pump itself or the walls of the utility room?

2) Depending on the approach, which materials are suitable for sound insulation? I was thinking of Basotect foam?

Good luck, F

Thanks for the graphic, but the ground source heat pump is already installed and the ground is finished accordingly...

So? There is certainly no underfloor heating beneath it. Depending on how strong the vibrations are, I considered it worth it. However, it should also be checked whether the installer was negligent and therefore has to make corrections themselves.

Why isn't it, like every heat pump, simply placed on the screed? I've never seen anything like this before.

Ok, thank you so far. I understand that the floor connection could be optimized.

Are there any other options to improve airborne sound insulation, as mentioned in my original question?

Soundproofing or noise reduction involves several factors. You could install a soundproof door, but this will only be effective if the walls do not allow much sound to pass through.

You should also consider potential issues with temperature and ventilation if you seal the room. Do you have a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery? Sound can also be transmitted through this...

Whether you can enclose the heat pump is something I would clarify with the manufacturer, as there could be problems with heat buildup, etc.

Thank you. I was more thinking about the strategy—whether to optimize directly at the heat pump (possibly an expensive enclosure with the manufacturer) or to improve the room using available resources.

I’ll start with the manufacturer.
