Hello everyone,
We have decided to build a solid timber house.
We now have several offers on hand;
Exterior wall option 1 (very expensive):
100mm solid wood
+ 200mm wood fiberboard
+ 60mm wood fiberboard
= 360mm (14 inches) wall thickness
The provider says this house stays cool and requires hardly any heating in winter.
Exterior wall option 2 (very economical):
100mm solid wood
+ 160mm stud cavity (blown with wood fiber insulation)
+ 40mm wood fiberboard
= 300mm (12 inches) wall thickness
Offered with air-to-water heat pump and underfloor heating
Exterior wall option 3: Lignotrend (mid-range price)
110mm cross-laminated timber ribs
+ chosen stud cavity width (blown with cellulose insulation)
Has anyone had experience with any of these construction methods?
Are there any experts here who would recommend one of these building techniques?
Thank you all

I would lean towards a solid wood wall for a timber construction house.

The multi-layered structure has advantages. Better sound insulation thanks to the separation (especially with the option of integrated insulation in between).. also, the issue of thermal bridges is 100% avoided.
We are currently working on a solid wood house for our mother at Passive House standard.
My "former house" was a wooden house from Stommel Haus. The walls consisted of 9.5 cm (3¾ inches) block beams both inside and outside, with wood fiber insulation boards in between. So, it was more or less a solid timber wall.
Unfortunately, this construction method is no longer offered. Apparently, it was no longer profitable, as there simply wasn’t a market for it.
Clear advantage: the indoor climate!
Disadvantage: high maintenance.
Also, depending on the type of interior surface finish, you can sometimes feel like a woodworm. We compensated for this at the time with very high ceilings and an open design. However, despite the great indoor climate, I wouldn’t want to build like that again!
Additionally, it wasn’t exactly cheap. Those thick wooden walls come at a cost.
On the other hand, the quality of workmanship and cooperation with Stommel Haus back then (we moved in 2006) was excellent!
