Hello,

can someone share their experience with the mentioned construction method?
What are the disadvantages of this building technique?
There isn’t much information available on this topic; mostly only positive aspects are mentioned, and even in various forums, there is little discussion about it.

Regards, C.

Expanded clay is not a "construction method" at all, but a masonry material (brick) that, similar to pumice or aerated concrete, is suitable for monolithic walls and is sometimes offered as a "brick" or occasionally as a wall panel.

Please explain the context or background of your question. Your thread history suggests you have received offers for shell construction and now want to know if another type of brick would be more cost-effective? — for that, I have the well-known advice: do not use any brick your builder is not familiar with.

The background of my question is definitely not about whether the "construction method" can save costs. It’s simply about whether anyone here on the forum has experience with this "building material" or might be familiar with it.

We want to build, and yes, we have received quotes. However, we have now found a much more affordable building plot in a different catchment area.

There is a construction company here that offers conventional masonry as well as the option with lightweight expanded clay concrete (LECA) prefabricated walls.

When you look at various websites, LECA seems to offer many advantages, but there is not much information about the disadvantages!

And please stop accusing people of trying to save money when a simple question is asked!

Then either build with lightweight expanded clay concrete or not with this company. I live in the heart of a pumice region, and hardly anyone builds with expanded clay concrete here (because the two materials are too similar, and pumice is abundant like sand or coffee in Brazil). Regarding the similar pumice, I can tell you that I have been happily living in it for five decades (in several houses).
