Hello,

we need a new corner sofa and visited a few furniture stores last weekend, but only to look around without asking for advice. Nothing really caught our eye, and when sitting on some sofas, I could even feel the internal structure. Did you choose a particular sofa or can you recommend a manufacturer? Have you had any negative experiences?

We also ended up choosing Freistil – the quality seems very good to us, and it is manufactured in Germany.

However, we still have an IKEA sofa bed that is over 10 years old (I can’t recall the name right now), which is used frequently, and I don’t think the quality is bad at all. Friends of ours recently bought a second sofa from IKEA for their living room and are very satisfied with it.

In the end, it’s definitely a matter of price and personal taste...

Referring back to your first post, Sabine
I assume you’ve already checked out the usual furniture stores. And when you mention the inner structure, I’m guessing you’ve tried the “no-name” sofas displayed in the middle, ready to take away.
Which is not a problem: if I’m looking for something inexpensive (under 1200€), I buy based on appearance and comfort, not durability.

If you buy a Rolf Benz, you pay about ten times as much. I can’t say how durable they are.

As I said before, a Schillig corner sofa costs around 3,000 to 4,000€ depending on where and what features you choose. We bought ours between Christmas and New Year during a big discount event and were satisfied with the price-to-performance ratio. However, after six years, the upholstery shows some wear, but the design still looks modern.

Before that, we had a Schillig leather sofa: still decent after eight years, but we didn’t like the leather anymore. It was slippery, sticky in summer, and not cozy at first. However, it’s certainly easier to clean with kids [emoji6].
By the way, light-colored leather suffers from jeans dye transfer.

Personally, I usually start at stores like Höffner, Kraft, and similar, but mostly just to check them off the list.
Then I go to Hamburg and surrounding areas to more specialized stores that don’t have unique pieces, but offer something less mainstream with a bit more class, and through their business concept aren’t too expensive.*
After that, I go to Ikea. I would probably buy my next sofa there—the value for money is right, and the seating areas are a bit more spacious. And it doesn’t have to last forever.

*Over time, I’ve created a mental list of individual stores that vary depending on upholstery, cabinets, or lamps. The latter works well online, upholstered furniture definitely not.

Stressless, outstanding quality and incredible seating comfort.
We sold our old set after 8 years (original price 7500€) for 4000 and bought a new one. Of course, it’s very expensive but it withstands everything... And by everything, I mean many kids and pets.
And one thing Scandinavians do better than anyone else: simple design.

We also have Schillig, but I’m not sure which model at the moment.

It really comes down to personal style. What are you thinking of?
Filter yourself here 😉
Where should it fit, and what’s your style?

The couch should be modern and above all have a seat depth of at least 67cm (26 inches). Today we visited Polster Aktuell, and they had a W. Schillig sofa with a 70cm (28 inches) seat depth and a box spring construction, which was really comfortable, although a few centimeters too long. The problem is that most sofas only have about 56cm (22 inches) seat depth, which is too shallow for us. It shouldn’t be leather either, as that feels too cold for us. We’ll keep looking and see what else Schillig has to offer, since they seem to be quite good.

Best regards
Sabine

Leather is usually not cold; it warms up within about 5 seconds. In summer, I find it more uncomfortable when it has heated up thoroughly. I also have two Stressless-style armchairs. After 5 years, the leather has become a bit more wrinkled compared to the beginning, but otherwise, there is no significant wear. In the living room, we have a leather sofa with a box spring bed and long-life leather. It is very comfortable, although I no longer remember the manufacturer. After 2.5 years, I don’t feel ready to make a long-term assessment yet.

It’s not cold... yes, it’s just as warm as the room. But that’s not enough for comfort. It simply feels cold and has a cool touch. That’s why I always say, also here:
