ᐅ Smart Home Video Doorbell Recommendation

Hello,

We are currently building a semi-detached house and will install a standard traditional doorbell.

Later, we want to replace it with a smart video doorbell.

Which smart video doorbell would you recommend? It should meet the following criteria:

No cloud storage – all data should remain within my own network.
The doorbell sound should ring as usual on the existing chime, and additionally ring on my phone and my wife's phone (it's enough if this works only when we are connected to Wi-Fi; it does not need to work when we are away).
The doorbell should continue to ring even if there is currently no Wi-Fi connection.
No monthly fees.

What is the legal situation? We probably won't be able to prevent the street from being recorded in the background. Is this a problem or illegal? The recording will only be temporary and only when someone rings the bell.

Well, you really have to be very tough to allow the world’s largest monopoly and hundreds of thousands of employees to install cameras and microphones in your home, which can be accessed from outside at any time as they please. But everyone is the architect of their own fortune.

Since I have no skeletons in the closet—actually, not even a basement—it’s not a problem for me. This data privacy hysteria in Germany is way over the top. Just think of the “Corona app” or video surveillance of public spaces. Everyone uses Google every day, yet complains about Alexa.

The decision to pay for a seemingly inexpensive product that allows full access to your data, or to spend a bit more money and keep the data in-house, is something everyone must decide for themselves. Either you pay with money or with your data.

I prefer to have the photos of my visitors on my own server. It's a matter of personal preference.

I agree with you when it comes to sensitive data. However, everyone uses Google and Facebook and/or Instagram.

Because I have nothing to hide.

Who does, though? But I don’t want my children to be watched and listened to by microphones and cameras in our home. I don’t want anyone eavesdropping on financial or legal matters. My bedroom is nobody’s business, even if employees at Amazon are particularly eager to listen in.
I want to have control over my own data.
Behind Alexa, there are not just anonymous computers, but people with specific intentions.
My home is my castle!

That’s typically German. You can see it however you like 🙂 You probably don’t even realize through which sources you could theoretically be spied on. Laptop/tablet/phone/car. Personally, I’m not that paranoid. Of course, when it comes to passwords or bank details, no question.

But in the end, you’re right. Everyone should do as they wish.

Believe me, I know that quite well. I'm neither even slightly schizophrenic nor naive, but realistic. Control over data means power, and power corrupts. It's as simple as that.
