Hello,

We are currently building a semi-detached house and will install a standard traditional doorbell.

Later, we want to replace it with a smart video doorbell.

Which smart video doorbell would you recommend? It should meet the following criteria:

No cloud storage – all data should remain within my own network.
The doorbell sound should ring as usual on the existing chime, and additionally ring on my phone and my wife's phone (it's enough if this works only when we are connected to Wi-Fi; it does not need to work when we are away).
The doorbell should continue to ring even if there is currently no Wi-Fi connection.
No monthly fees.

What is the legal situation? We probably won't be able to prevent the street from being recorded in the background. Is this a problem or illegal? The recording will only be temporary and only when someone rings the bell.

Filming is not the issue, but recording is.

We decided to go with a Doorbird. Yes, there is also a cloud subscription available, but it is not necessary to use it. However, I suspect that some central entity still routes the data, although I have not checked this yet. There is a corresponding indoor video station and/or a regular chime.

From my point of view, the most important thing now is to have the appropriate cables installed, meaning to the doorbell location and to the future chime.

Which cables need to be installed?

I wanted a doorbell that can be connected to the standard wiring
or if special cables need to be installed (probably at a higher cost).

Which cables would be required?

Get advice from the electrician and the door installer, otherwise you might end up like me:

Definitely run network cables to the door/buzzer. This gives you flexibility regarding 2-wire or IP systems.
Also, don’t install the doorbell too low. The cameras should be positioned at face height. (Alternatively, consider installing an additional network cable for another camera.)
Start thinking now about which lock you want to install (automatic lock/motorized lock) and how you want to open the door (fingerprint, PIN, active/passive chip, key).

DoorBird ALWAYS requires the cloud or an internet connection; without it, the device simply won’t work. Other systems only need the cloud or online services for mobile ringing. Within the home network, most IP intercoms can be called directly via SIP.

In all systems that I would consider at least somewhat reliable, local ringing and mobile notifications are completely separate. This means there is a relay somewhere that physically activates the doorbell in the hallway.

For wiring, it’s generally recommended to install a two-wire cable (duplex cable) to stay flexible. Maybe a fingerprint reader will be added at some point?

Apart from that, mobile ringing outside of Wi-Fi won’t work in any reasonably convenient way without a cloud or online service—regardless of whether it’s DoorBird, 2N, Gira, or another brand. Something has to connect you to your network or the doorbell. Either you maintain a permanent VPN connection to your home, or you rely on remote calling through some servers.

What do you think about doorbells like the Ring from Amazon or the Eufy from Anker?
