Hello Mycraft,

a note. There are now experts with 960mA and 1280mA as well. The standard does not limit these to 640mA.

I assume you will also say something about the ETS, so here’s a tip from me: describe the difference between devices (the Light can have 20 devices) and channels. This is often misunderstood.

The problem is that not all devices support TP1-256, meaning they cannot be installed on lines with more than 64 devices.

All devices support TP1-64, which is the "older standard."

A TP1-256 line can only consist entirely of TP1-256 devices. Power supplies with more than 640mA are only useful if you use exclusively devices that support TP1-256. Currently, this is more of an exception than the rule... but this will likely change in a few years. However, in the residential sector, this is largely irrelevant since 90% of installations easily manage with 64 devices per line.

Abbreviations like "PM" should at least be written out once. In the KNX user forum, beginners have no chance of keeping up because about 50% of the posts consist of abbreviations 😀

You’ve been quite detailed so far. Since the title generally refers to bus systems and smart home technology, my question is whether you focus exclusively on KNX or also cover other systems?

I want to be prepared for a smart home upgrade and told the electrician that I would like to have both 24-volt star wiring and the regular power cables installed. Initially, I plan to use the standard electrical system and later switch to the smart home solution.

He says this is technically not possible...!? However, I have read in a KNX installation manual that it is indeed possible...

Does anyone have an idea why it might not be feasible? I want to be ready for the appointment tomorrow—if he doesn’t want to do it, I’ll just look for someone else...

I explained the reason why your plan is only partially feasible in the information thread.

The wiring setup is different for bus systems.

With a conventional approach, you have a power cable that runs from the distribution panel to room A, then to B, and then to C. Somewhere along the line, the live wire is "interrupted" by the light switch controlling lighting point D.

In bus systems, however, the wiring usually follows this pattern:

Distribution panel -> A
Distribution panel -> B
Distribution panel -> C
Distribution panel -> D

For example, the light switch receives the SELV (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) cable, which runs throughout the entire house, from A through B and C... up to Z.
