Hello everyone,

I have a problem and need your help:

My roof structure (roof shape: four-sided roof, city villa style, I’m not sure what the exact term for this shape is) rests directly with the rafters on the masonry, which has a concrete U-profile cast on it (two-layer Ytong-brick). KVH timber was used.

By chance, I heard from an expert that a sliding or separating membrane must be installed between the wood and the masonry. This membrane serves as a structural protection for the wood. The issue is addressed in DIN 68800.

My building supervisor told me that he knows a membrane is used in this way when a ring beam is installed (which I don’t have). For my construction he was not aware of this, and since he cannot assess it himself, he relies on the carpentry company. Of course, they deny responsibility. The supervisor also mentioned that he had checked some forums and found conflicting opinions—some say yes, others no.

I looked for information in DIN 68800 but couldn’t really find anything.

Can someone tell me where in DIN 68800 (part, section, etc.) this topic is covered and whether I need a membrane or not?

I would be very grateful for any helpful response.

Best regards

I have no idea if a membrane is required. Our carpenter and roofer did not use a membrane for our house either (as far as I can remember, I haven’t seen one used for our neighbors’ houses either).
