In my parents-in-law’s garden, there is a wonderful pool that we have enjoyed using every summer for many years. However, since we have children who are always running around or playing roughly, the fun of spending summer at their place has diminished somewhat. No matter how often we explain that they shouldn’t get too close to the pool, they don’t listen, and even if they do, accidents can still happen quickly—they might slip and fall into the pool unintentionally. No one can just sit there relaxed. Now we are looking for an affordable solution that looks good and, of course, adds more safety and peace of mind. We would prefer not to spend five-figure sums on a solution that will only be needed for a few years. Do you have any ideas?

1. Learn to swim quickly
2. Until then, stay in the garden with a children’s life jacket on, similar to sailing/houseboat safety
3. If unsure, move the coffee table and seating area to the poolside

Setting up a chicken wire fence. Not very attractive, but durable enough.
