Hello dear house builders, homeowners, and construction experts,

I am studying civil engineering and am currently planning the construction of a four-story (four-storey) house for study purposes. For this, I initially chose a timber frame construction method.

I had planned to simply use precast concrete or wood panels for the walls and ceilings. However, today my contact person explained that it is not possible to plan the project solely with prefabricated elements (except for the foundation), because connecting the individual prefabricated components is too complicated and that cast-in-place concrete for the walls and ceilings would be preferable.

This is the first time I have heard this, so I would like to ask the homeowners and construction experts here for their opinions. Do the ceilings and walls really have to be cast in concrete to maintain the load-bearing structure?

Thank you in advance,

You’ve been given incorrect information. Try searching for "multi-story wooden office building in Zurich Shigeru Ban" (for example). Timber frame construction for residential buildings is considered quite trendy by some architectural firms.

As for New York, your know-it-all probably has never heard: the skyscrapers there are steel frame constructions.
