A roof usually provides shade almost all the time. The question is, how much shade do you want?
Our terrace also faces southeast, and we have about 2.50 meters (8 feet) covered with a lean-to roof. That’s enough for us. A little sunlight is still welcome in the darker seasons to enter the room.

We tried to simulate the whole thing back then using the sun’s position and sun path diagrams.
For summer, one illustration should actually point upwards and the other downwards. Our issue at the time was whether to have a 50 cm (20 inches) or 80 cm (31 inches) roof overhang and, with the recessed building section, whether to have 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) or 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in) clearance. We ultimately chose the smaller roof overhang so that we would get a bit more sun at the dining table during winter and spring. In summer, both overhangs provide sufficient full shading.
