Hello,
we are in the final stages of planning our single-family house, and one topic is currently occupying us: Is a niche 2m (6 ft 7 in) long with an appropriate depth of about 65cm (26 in) sufficient to serve as a wardrobe?

Thank you, I saw it the same way, just wanted to be sure that I wasn’t mistaken... I’ll go back to planning...

Currently, we have rows of hooks on the wall and no hangers, but all the jackets for the whole year are stored there – which isn’t really necessary. In addition, we have floor-to-ceiling shelves 1m (3.3 ft) wide, where four pairs of shoes fit side by side, as well as baskets for shoe cream, bowls, hats, etc. – no school bags or shopping bags (there is a storage room in the new house and currently a basement for that). Umbrellas are stored separately.

Sorting clothes seasonally to some extent is sufficient. People who keep heavy winter coats and boots out all year round have clearly lost control over their lives.

I generally agree with you... but when you follow the floor plan discussions here for a while, I start to wonder where many people actually store their winter boots and coats? In an 80sqm (860 sq ft) double garage or in the 5.5sqm (59 sq ft) utility/laundry room? Or do they keep them together with the Christmas decorations and suitcases in the 1.2m (4 ft) high attic space?

Yes, with some floor plans here, you really have to ask yourself that question.
That’s why I often say that storage space is (almost) as important as living space.
A basement, for example, is a great place to properly store your collection of shoes and jackets.
