Hi everyone,
I’m new here
First of all, hello to all and thanks in advance for any answers!
I am renovating a single-family house and converting it into a two-family house.
New windows and roller shutters will be installed. The only thing I want to automate is the roller shutters. Since I come from the IT field, I’m quite fed up with systems that don’t work and want to avoid any trouble at home.
So, I’m looking for a solution that is simple and cost-effective. App control is optional. In the long term, I find that questionable. Who knows if the software will still run on a device in 20 years (probably not).
I keep hearing about KNX... Is that really necessary?
Basically, I would be fine with simple switches. Up and down.
Cool. Of course, there could also be a main switch. But the wiring effort puts me off.
Then maybe a bus system like KNX makes sense after all?
What do you recommend?
Sorry if my questions seem basic. I haven’t dealt with this before.

boxandroof27 Mar 2019 10:37We wanted something simple and chose Somfy. We had IO wireless motors installed everywhere, and that was it. We planned and purchased the control system later as a DIY project.
It can be upgraded from basic to relatively smart.
We use the basic control unit (app + timer) along with affordable wireless switches (20-40€ (22-44 USD) from an online auction site starting with an e and ending with bay), which can be paired with one or multiple motors.
Somfy is unlikely to disappear from the market anytime soon and is widely used.
Disadvantage of Somfy: proprietary system.

It can be upgraded from simple to fairly smart. Are you satisfied? What exactly did you plan or buy for it?
Something like the Connexoon box or TaHoma Premium?

Somfy io is proprietary, and as far as I know, it isn’t possible. (Unless you solder connections onto paired remote controls).

Something like a Connexoon box or TaHoma Premium? I have the Connexoon box. Yes, I’m satisfied; everything works smoothly, installation was simple, and I only had to explain to the contractors that I wanted io motors and that they require power. During construction, I didn’t have to worry about complex controls or wiring plans (which would have been more expensive than wireless in my case), but I also didn’t want to face the limitations you might get with permanently wired switches with timers.
Components like switches can be found cheaply in online auctions. However, I’m skeptical about a closed standard, so I would look for something open and future-proof.
The only thing I miss in the control system is a larger offset for sunrise/sunset. It only allows up to one hour before or after. Maybe this is possible with the larger control box.
