ᐅ Silicate paint on walls, emulsion paint on ceiling, color differences?

Hello everyone,

we are planning to start the painting work soon. The walls have gypsum plaster which was subsequently skim-coated. The concrete ceilings will be covered with painter’s fleece wallpaper.

We would have preferred to use silicate dispersion paint for everything. However, since wallpaper should not be painted with silicate paint, as the mineral-based paint cannot properly bond to it, only dispersion paint is suitable for the ceilings. We wondered if it might be possible to order dispersion paint and silicate dispersion paint in the same color tone from the same manufacturer and paint the ceilings with the dispersion paint and the walls with the silicate paint. Or would it be better to use only dispersion paint everywhere to avoid any color differences?

Silicate dispersion paints can sometimes be applied on wallpaper. A well-known manufacturer starting with S offers a specific paint that is explicitly marketed for this purpose, so we will probably use that for everything.

I painted my entire house with Keim Innostar dispersion silicate paint and am very satisfied with it.
The drywall needed to be painted twice, especially the green material in the bathroom, while the walls only needed one coat.
For the concrete ceiling, a friend and I first fully applied and sanded Knauf Rotband joint compound. It was a tough job but definitely worth it.

To be safe, I primed everything beforehand as recommended by the manufacturer, mainly to avoid color differences. I did a lot of prep work with fine filler, which absorbs differently than gypsum plaster.
Always use what the manufacturer recommends here—don’t just buy the store’s own brand at the hardware store...

The opinion of some guy from NRW here who can’t even tell silicate paint from dispersion silicate paint... I’ve rarely read such nonsense.

Normally, I really appreciate you and your posts, but here you are giving credibility to fear-mongering tradespeople who, like medieval guild members, try to turn their craft into some kind of magical secret knowledge.

He is just a desk theorist who knows the construction site only from photos or the paint roller only from stories. Of course, the tradesperson always says this or that is absolutely impossible. But they want to make money, usually by doing things as simply as possible—that is, the way they always do.

By the way, the alkaline effect is only really relevant in the first few years, as new buildings are especially prone to mold and rot during that time. Once everything is completely dry after two heating seasons, mold is hardly ever a problem. Of course, silicate paint does not replace proper ventilation. The walls may resist mold, but the backs of cabinets can still be affected.

However, I am still curious about the chemical and physical background of how a paint that consists of more than 95% mineral can lose this property over time. Does gypsum plaster also become organic over its lifespan? Will my walls be “greeting me” in 15 years, and will I end up having to take care of them like a hairdresser or help them with homework?
