Good morning,

I am currently building a flat roof garage using a REI 90 fire protection panel and need a garage door with a width of 500 cm (197 inches). It is located in the corner of the garden, serves as a storage room, and security/burglary is not a priority.

My question now is whether to choose a door with a built-in pedestrian door or a separate entrance door.

  • Advantages of a built-in pedestrian door: the wall facing the house remains free, and I can allow vegetation to grow in its line of sight, which is important to me. The other walls are not suitable for this, as two are at the property boundary to the neighbor and one is fully occupied by the main door.
  • Advantages of a separate door: significantly cheaper, and it does not weaken the sectional door.

My main question is: one of the suppliers said that pedestrian doors are weak points in sectional doors (especially at this width), weaken the door, and advised against them. What is your opinion or experience on this? The pedestrian door must have a low threshold, as a high one is likely to be permanently impractical.

Another question: for my house garage door, I have a lintel height of less than 20 cm (8 inches) and clearance space between the door and ceiling, but some door suppliers require up to 35 cm (14 inches) – how can that be?

P.S. It’s incredible dealing with tradespeople and sourcing materials these days… but well, this too shall pass…

Thanks, best regards Oliver

I don’t have time to answer your side question, especially since I’m not skilled at quick sketches. Regarding your main question, my assessment is clear: when it comes to a double-width sectional door, it’s best to avoid including a pedestrian door—no matter where it would be placed.

Thank you very much for the information!

I have now purchased a secondary entrance door and will order the sectional door without a pedestrian door.

Thanks again, best regards, Oliver
