ᐅ Side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units are now rarely seen without an ice maker.

We are considering getting a new kitchen in the next few years. For that, we want to install a separate side-by-side fridge/freezer unit. While browsing, it feels like about 80% of the models come with an ice cube dispenser. I seriously wonder who constantly needs ice cubes? I don’t know anyone—literally no one in my entire circle of friends and family—who uses ice cubes, and that’s been the case for over 40 years. So why do so many models have these features? If you don’t want one, the selection drops drastically. Another issue is that the new location wouldn’t have a water connection, which I assume is needed for the dispenser?
Does anyone here have one of these dispensers, and how often do you use it? Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and sits unused?

How is the noise level? Is the appliance located in an open-plan area or in a separate kitchen? Open kitchen connected to the dining/living area, and we don’t hear the refrigerator.
By the way, unlike our previous Liebherr, which constantly switched the compressor on loudly and annoyingly... 🙂

We recently got one, quite by chance actually. We just moved into a temporary apartment while our house is being finished. The fridge here is also a side-by-side model. The idea was that we could take it with us to the new house so it could go in the pantry as an additional cooler for drinks. For that purpose, we chose a side-by-side fridge that also has an ice cube function. At first, I thought it was just a gimmick. But now that we have it, I have to admit we use it every day.
Ours doesn’t have a water connection; it works with a tank. Of course, you are only supposed to fill it with water.

Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and useless over time?We have had a side-by-side refrigerator with an ice and water dispenser for 4 years now. At home, we drink 100% of our water from the dispenser—there’s no easier or more cost-effective way. When we have guests, they can choose; usually, it’s a 50/50 split between dispenser water and bottled water.
In late spring and summer, about 5 months of the year, I regularly use the ice dispenser several times a week for cocktails. It’s just as convenient and efficient as it can be.
We’re very satisfied and would never want to be without it.
We do a more thorough cleaning about twice a year, so nothing ever gets moldy or unpleasant.
