ᐅ Side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units are now rarely seen without an ice maker.

We are considering getting a new kitchen in the next few years. For that, we want to install a separate side-by-side fridge/freezer unit. While browsing, it feels like about 80% of the models come with an ice cube dispenser. I seriously wonder who constantly needs ice cubes? I don’t know anyone—literally no one in my entire circle of friends and family—who uses ice cubes, and that’s been the case for over 40 years. So why do so many models have these features? If you don’t want one, the selection drops drastically. Another issue is that the new location wouldn’t have a water connection, which I assume is needed for the dispenser?
Does anyone here have one of these dispensers, and how often do you use it? Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and sits unused?

So, I don’t want to give up our LG anymore, water and ice dispenser, French door, and I was skeptical about LG at first, but I can’t complain. The only thing is that it’s a bit noisy in an open living area, so you might hear it sometimes.
The appliance is 4 years old, has been moved once, and we’ve never really had any trouble with it, except once waiting 6 weeks for a glass shelf. Also, the freezer part hasn’t frozen over or developed excessive ice buildup so far.

So far, we have mainly dealt with Samsung side-by-side refrigerators that have broken down. Samsung doesn’t always stand for durability. Although I was surprised that they replaced the display on a 2.5-year-old TV under goodwill. Take a look at LG appliances. We actually have an LG household: TV, dryer, washing machine, and refrigerator. But I just really like their side-by-side models.
Oh, that reminds me—the side-by-side refrigerator my father-in-law had also broke down after three years. The freezer section stopped working. Repair wasn’t possible because the manufacturer doesn’t supply spare parts, or the repair was not cost-effective. Same with Samsung. But of course, that could just be a coincidence. How long has the side-by-side refrigerator you are considering been on the market? Are there enough older reviews? If so, it should be fine; otherwise, I’d stay away from it (-:
We also find French doors much more practical than side-by-side doors and probably have the same model as @ypg. Very quiet, very easy to use, and a large/wide usable space. Depending on how you organize the inside of the refrigerator, you don’t necessarily have to open both doors every time. For example, if you place the items you use most often on one side (left), you can access everything with just one door open. The drawer can be opened separately as well.
The drawers in the freezer section are great and much more practical than doors.
