ᐅ Side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units are now rarely seen without an ice maker.

We are considering getting a new kitchen in the next few years. For that, we want to install a separate side-by-side fridge/freezer unit. While browsing, it feels like about 80% of the models come with an ice cube dispenser. I seriously wonder who constantly needs ice cubes? I don’t know anyone—literally no one in my entire circle of friends and family—who uses ice cubes, and that’s been the case for over 40 years. So why do so many models have these features? If you don’t want one, the selection drops drastically. Another issue is that the new location wouldn’t have a water connection, which I assume is needed for the dispenser?
Does anyone here have one of these dispensers, and how often do you use it? Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and sits unused?

@K a t j a ... if you currently have a 70cm (28 inch) wide appliance, you should definitely check out side-by-side refrigerators in person. You might be quite surprised at how much narrower the fridge/freezer space is compared to your 70cm (28 inch) wide unit. Also, when it comes to the freezer, consider what you want to store, for example, a large fish or something similar... will that fit in a side-by-side refrigerator?Don’t worry, my husband is an angler but luckily he doesn’t catch anything. 😉 But you’re right, the advantage of the extra width might outweigh the dislike of the two doors. I’ll have to think about it a bit more. By the way, we will keep our current appliance and move it to the pantry. So space shouldn’t be an issue then. That’s all there is!

But whiskey (meaning bourbon): okay.
I can’t see any scenario where drinking Grants makes sense.
What was the topic again?

I also don’t understand why anyone would drive a Dacia, yet many do. It’s really a matter of personal taste and budget. I’m not someone who does things just because others want or expect it; I prefer to do what I enjoy. And if I drink something with cola, I’d rather go for cheap liquor than expensive quality.
The topic was Side by Side :-)
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Samsung at all. Our French door refrigerator is now 3 years old and has had problems with the ice maker from the very beginning. It keeps freezing up because, in this model, the ice maker isn’t located in the freezer but in the main refrigerator door. The technician came at least 5 times during the warranty period, each time replacing parts, and twice we had to completely defrost everything, which was a huge hassle. Conclusion: the unit never worked properly… now it’s three years old and the ice maker is malfunctioning again. Samsung’s response: they don’t care since the warranty has expired. Treating customers who spent 3000 euros this way—I will never buy from this company again. It’s clearly a design flaw.
That said, I really liked the ice maker when it worked and wouldn’t want to do without it.
