ᐅ Is it still worth installing satellite TV in a new build?

Hello,

we are currently planning our semi-detached house.

I wanted to ask for your opinion on satellite TV.

Would you still consider satellite TV in a new build at all? So far, I have had good experiences with satellite TV.

A friend of mine told me that from 2024, fees will also be charged for satellite TV (similar to cable TV subscription fees).

Is that true? What is the story with these fees?

Does satellite TV still make sense?

Yes, I watch a lot of streaming and on-demand services, but I currently still use satellite TV for live sports.

I will place a small Selfsat dual antenna somewhere on the garage and run one coaxial cable to the living room and one to the utility room. Just to have it, as there will be little to no linear TV watching anyway.

I mostly agree – if you really still watch TV, go ahead with it, but make sure not to save on network cabling (double outlets in every room, more in the living room...). Sat-over-IP works well for me with high-quality converters, but it’s only used about once a year. Since I get it from the neighboring house, it’s not a big issue; otherwise, I would have been annoyed.

What I would also like to add: Don’t sacrifice valuable photovoltaic space on the roof by installing the satellite dish there. The dish is much better placed on the façade. It is better protected from wind and weather, and it’s easier to access if maintenance is needed.

We also installed a satellite dish, but only on the patio roof and leading into the living room. I consider this only a temporary solution, but I didn’t want to do without it entirely. However, even there, we now mostly use the internet rather than the satellite when we watch anything at all. In the other rooms, there are LAN sockets, and streaming or downloading is the standard.

ok thanks
Satellite TV really seems to be on the decline

I’m currently unsure where the satellite dish should be aimed
was it exactly south?

Where would be the optimal location for a satellite dish?

The roof is difficult to access (for possible maintenance) and takes up valuable space for solar panels

What would you say about the garage roof?

Yes, it roughly points south. But you can easily look this up online. If the dish is set at an elevation of about 30 degrees and is not directly facing a wall, it should work fine. Exact values depend on your location. Mine will also be installed on the garage roof, so I don’t need to see it.

It’s a very affordable option for watching free TV. Although for a large TV, the SD channels from private broadcasters are quite poor quality. So you’d need HD+ and that involves costs.
I’d still recommend installing it – I mostly use streaming myself – but at least the dish, since you could also use SAT over IP and wouldn’t need a satellite distribution system anymore.

Disadvantages include high installation costs (unless you do it yourself) and less space for photovoltaic panels 😎 We had considered it but have now switched entirely to the internet.
