Hello,
I am currently putting together a Metod / Ringhult kitchen. For the fridge/freezer, the 220cm (87 inches) tall cabinet normally has an 80cm (31 inches) high door at the bottom part where the freezer section is. For a more uniform appearance, I would prefer to use two doors, each 40cm (16 inches) high, which is significant due to the additional thickness from the blanket handles. So, after fitting the two 40cm (16 inches) doors with handles, they would still need to be connected—possibly with a rail not available from Ikea or some other DIY solution.

The question is how this affects the soft-close door mechanism. Does anyone have tips or experience with this?

I would attach the sliding door fittings both on the upper half. The lower half will then be carried along and only requires a light connection to the upper part.
However, this will require drilling new holes in the freezer door. In the event of a warranty claim, the warranty might be denied, even if the damage is unrelated to the drilling, and the refusal would probably not hold up legally.
When connecting the door, it is important to ensure that nothing rubs against the refrigerator door. Using a dowel pin is a safe option in this regard.
