Pingumann6 Sep 2012 08:56Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right subforum for my topic:
Since my very old drain pipe (made of metal) has a crack and is leaking slightly in two places, it now needs to be partially replaced. The plumber who inspected it suggested using a plastic pipe, which would connect at the ends to the still intact sections of the existing metal drain pipe.
I am considering whether to go with the plastic pipe or continue using metal as before. What are the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipes compared to metal ones? The metal pipe just seems much more durable to me...
Thank you very much for any advice!

Plastic doesn't rust.Plastic does not rust, but over time it can become brittle and crack. Of course, nowadays there are modern plastic compounds that are very durable and resistant.
Both options have their pros and cons...
You have to form your own opinion (cost-benefit factor).
The main difference between plastic and metal drainage pipes is primarily the noise level, but there is also a price difference. If sound insulation is very important to you, you should definitely insist on metal pipes. Otherwise, there is also the Silent PP from Geberit, which is made of plastic but comes quite close to the noise levels of an SML metal drainage pipe.
You don’t need to worry about durability with either type of drainage pipe.
Best regards
