ᐅ Sewer Pipe Noise Passing Through the Room?

In our single-family home, a wastewater pipe from the bathroom above (shower room with WC) is planned to run through the living area, enclosed with 11cm (4.3 inches) bricks. My question is whether this will be noticeably noisy. Until now, I have lived in the attic and am not familiar with this. If noise is an issue, are there soundproofing options? We do not want to change the floor plan.

Thank you for your answers.

How is it usually done otherwise? Doesn’t it mostly go like this? Definitely insulate the pipe.

We forgot to install insulation in one bathroom, and in the bathroom below you can clearly hear when the toilet is flushed or someone is showering. In the middle bathroom, you can barely hear anything from the top bathroom because we planned insulation there (behind the drywall). In the living area… well, if the floor plan or pipe routing doesn’t allow for another solution, I would just insulate very well and live with it. It could be worse. But usually, it’s best to arrange bathrooms stacked on top of each other.

It doesn’t necessarily have to go through the ground floor bathroom; a storage room or a possible utility room is sufficient — just not a living area. Insulation aside, the sound is noticeable (usually quite clearly). Some people are bothered by it (myself included), others are not; it’s all a matter of priorities.

I would always recommend adjusting the design, but if it doesn’t really bother the original poster, then they should just have it well-insulated and learn to live with the remaining noise. The world won’t end because of it, I agree with that 😉

I am very sensitive about this, and in our case, the wastewater pipe from the main bathroom runs through the dining area. However, we had it specially soundproofed, and now I don’t find it disturbing at all, especially since you’re not constantly showering or using the toilet all day.

What I would find more annoying is having to hear the sounds of guests using the guest bathroom while I’m waiting in the dining room for them to come back.
